Summer Function Club

The Summer Function Club is a live, interactive, coach-led, online club where we identify our responsibilities and make a plan to achieve. Students set goals to find work, research, read a book, practice math or writing skills, or develop a passion project. They make commitments to "being a good roommate and participating in family activities.

My Why: Tracking Goals & Habits

Peg Dawson and Richard Guare state that "goal setting is a critical executive function skill that allows individuals to bridge the gap between setting a target and taking the necessary actions to achieve it. It is essential for boosting motivation, focusing attention, and building resilience to overcome obstacles." Each Function Club session begins with goal setting, review and revision.

Students create SMART goals that inform their motivations for success.

Students who write down specific, time-bound goals are roughly 33% to 42% more successful.

Students engaging in structured goal-setting interventions show a 22% increase in academic performance.experience more productive and satisfying summer breaks.

My When: Time Management & Calendaring

"Students who use calendars are more successful because they effectively manage time, reduce anxiety, and improve task completion rates. Calendars allow students to visualize deadlines, plan study sessions, and balance academics with personal life, often leading to better grades and reduced stress." -Columbia Business School

Each Function Club session directs students to reference school, family and athletic calendar and to update their weekly and daily calendars accordingly.

My What: Responsibilities & Tasks

The summer season allows for executive function development in daily life without often without the pressures of coursework assignments. Whether taking a summer course or not, young people meet with their Just2 coach to engage in goal-informed tasks and activities that lead them closer to accomplishment.

Students identify tasks and activities.

Students record data from portals at their FC organizational tool.

Students make further updates on their calendars.

Students communicate with parents, mentors and community members via email to clarify and verify their next steps.

Parents are included on communications and are provided with progress evidence. ie. chapters read, communications sent or recieved, tasks completed.

My How: Organization of Materials

Students who make a plan for meeting their summer goals are more successful in the upcoming semesters. They learn how to get what they want, to live strategically rather than circumstantially. Planning helps students break down large tasks, prioritize workloads, and develop essential time-management skills that improve academic performance. Each Function Club session concludes with an action plan that supports daily routines for knowing what to do and when it will be done. These plans are shared with parents, mentors and coaches.

Students create their daily action plan for meeting expectations and deadlines.

Students update and share their daily plans.

Parents feel informed and confident that improvement and success is intact.
