After decades of working with students across some of the country's most demanding classrooms, Michael John and Jaz kept seeing the same thing. Bright, capable kids who couldn't follow through. Parents who were exhausted from chasing, reminding, and second-guessing. A widening gap between what students said was happening at school and what actually was. The ability was never the issue — the skills to manage it were.
That pattern didn't start in a tutoring office. Michael John spent years teaching some of education's most complex and underserved students — from children with physical and cognitive challenges at the Delaware County Intermediate Unit, to self-contained classrooms in the Philadelphia area, to five years teaching mathematics and science in San Francisco's most under-resourced schools. Jaz, a psychologist and learning specialist, brought her own lens to the work — one rooted in understanding behavior, relationships, and what it actually takes for a young person to change. Together, they saw what most educators were missing: students didn't need more content help. They needed to be taught how to plan, follow through, and take ownership.
Michael John and Jaz founded Just2 Tutoring in 2001. Over two decades and thousands of students later, the Just2 team has helped young people improve not just their grades, but their relationships with their parents and themselves. That work ultimately led to the creation of the Function Club — a structured coaching program built specifically to address the accountability and productivity gaps that keep capable students from reaching their potential.

After a recent divorce and relocation, James was struggling to keep up with his school work. He was unable or unwilling to let me help him. We tried a few tutors but none seemed to fit. Our neighbor told us about Just2 and James agreed to try The Function Club. Within two weeks, his grades began to improve and for the first time, I received encouraging messages from his teachers. James built skills and habits that allowed him to know what he needed to do and make a plan to get it done on-time with a quality effort. He still attends The Function Club every week. Our lives have been transformed and we are grateful for Just2 and The Function Club.
